City staff is in a heightened state of readiness as we take steps to reduce the impact of Hurricane Sandy.  We encourage citizens and guests to prepare now.

During this lengthy storm, our first responders will be at the ready. Emergency calls should go to 911.  Non-emergency calls should go to 385-5000.

City staff is securing loose objects at the Oceanfront and is building a sand berm on the beach near Rudee Inlet to protect Grommet Island Park. Public Works and Public Utility crews are preparing for possible impacts to roads, sewers and water distribution systems.

City officials will communicate openings and closings throughout the storm. We are currently evaluating the need for opening shelters. These decisions will be dictated by Hurricane Sandy as it approaches.

Emergency preparedness information is available at For up-to-date storm information, follow us on Facebook and Twitter (#VBSandy), or call VB311 Citizen Services by dialing 311 on landlines within the city limits, (757) 385-3111 by cell phone, or visit for online assistance.
