Based on the present threat posed by Hurricane Sandy, the City of Virginia Beach asks residents to prepare in advance. Because of the anticipated severity of the storm, residents are urged to keep informed of current and forecast weather conditions by listening to local television and radio stations. City leadership continues to monitor storm projections and will issue guidance as appropriate.

Based upon your circumstances and where you live (mobile home, areas prone to flooding, electric-dependent, etc.), you should make decisions or be prepared to make decisions about whether to shelter in place or consider leaving the area. No evacuation order has been issued at this time.

The city also recommends that all Virginia Beach residents:

  • Discuss your family’s plans for disaster.
  • Have an emergency supply kit of food, medications, water, first-aid kit, battery-powered radio, flashlights, batteries, sleeping bags, blankets, etc.
  • Identify an out-of-state relative or friend to serve as a family contact. Make sure everyone in the family knows the name, address and phone number of the family contact.
  • Make provisions for pets in case of evacuation, as they are not allowed in public shelters.
  • Identify alternative shelters, such as the homes of other family members or friends.
  • Listen to local radio and television stations for the most up-to-date information.

Emergency preparedness information is available on the city’s website at:  www.VBgov.com/beprepared.
