Last Call to Claim Original Kids Cove Pickets

Open pick-up available Saturday, October 27 or Saturday, November 3 from 9am – 1pm at Parks & Recreation City Wide Office

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Pickets from the original wooden Kids Cove playground at Mount Trashmore Park that have not yet been claimed are available for retrieval from 9am – 1pm on Saturday, October 27 or Saturday, November 3 at the Parks & Recreation City-Wide Office, located at 2289 Lynnhaven Parkway. This is the last call for individuals who wish to reclaim the picket they purchased in 1993.

The removal of the wooden Kids Cove playground at Mount Trashmore Park took place in March 2011. This 14,000 square foot wooden playground was built by 5,190 volunteers in 1993. While beloved and very popular, the existing wooden playground was not fully accessible and could not be modernized to fully meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines or present-day standards for public use playgrounds.

A newer and larger Kids Cove playground opened next to the wooden playground on December 10, 2010. Standing at 25,973 sq. ft. in size with rubber playground surfacing, the new Kids Cove includes three distinct play areas: a general play area, a swing area, and a climber area. The new play area is almost two times the size of the original wooden Kids Cove playground, and includes four new mini-picnic shelters, landscaping, and walkways. Additionally, the new play area is fully compliant with ADA guidelines and is barrier-free to accommodate all children.
