No Time to Read? Find a Good “Listen” at Your Library

June is Audio Book Month

Friday, June 03, 2011

If your to-do list makes it difficult to sit down and read a good book, check out an audio book instead. Virginia Beach Public Library offers fiction and nonfiction for all ages in audio formats, including CDs and downloadable versions, at no charge for those with a Virginia Beach Public Library card.

With the increasing usage of smart phones and other portable electronics, the demand for downloadable audio books is rising. Virginia Beach Public Library has increased its collection to meet customer demand. In July 2009, when the library began offering downloadable audio books through the vendor OverDrive, there were 884 titles. Since then, the collection has grown to 4,119 titles and has seen about 39,000 checkouts. Just last month, customers downloaded 2,240 audio books.

The library also offers more than 8,600 e-books.

“One of the library’s roles in the community is to make books and information accessible using new technology, and to help citizens feel comfortable using it,” said Clara Hudson, acting library support service manager. “Downloading a book is a convenient option. You can check out a book 24/7, it travels well, and it will disappear when it’s due – no overdue fees.” Like print and books on CD, however, there are limited downloadable copies so there may be a wait for more popular titles.

The library’s download site includes tutorials and information on compatible devices. Library staffers are available to answer questions and help use of the latest technology.

Whether you prefer to download or to pop in a CD, celebrate Audio Book Month by listening to that bestseller you’ve been meaning to read!
