Celebrate Fatherhood on Sunday, June 24, 1 p.m. at Williams Farm Community Park

Friday, June 22, 2012

Father’s Day may have been last Sunday, but the opportunity to honor fathers and the important role they play in their children’s lives isn’t over. In support of the national Fatherhood Initiative, the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation is sponsoring a “Celebration of Fatherhood” event on Sunday, June 24, from 1 to 4 p.m., at Williams Farm Community Park, 5252 Learning Circle. Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr., will read a proclamation declaring June 2012 as Fatherhood Month in Virginia Beach. The event is free and open to the public.

“Celebration of Fatherhood” is intended to promote family unity by providing opportunities for fathers to gain child development and sustainable life skills and resources, while participating in cultural, educational and social activities with their children. The event includes a picnic, entertainment, arts and crafts, a flag football game, other family-friendly activities and special appearances by the Professional Indoor Football League Richmond Raiders team.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, children who live absent their biological fathers are, on average, at least two to three times more likely to experience educational, health, emotional and behavioral problems, among other issues, than their peers who live with their married, biological or adoptive parents. The Fatherhood Initiative is a national initiative to promote and support fathers in staying connected with their children and strengthen their family’s bond.
