Virginia Beach Couple Donate for a Worthy Cause

Friday, May 18, 2012

Art and Jan Bartlett, long time Virginia Beach residents, supported their police department on Thursday, May 17, with a donation to purchase two Automated External Defibrillators, (commonly known as AED).  After they saw a recent story aired on WVEC –TV 13 news where the life of Detective Vernon Jones was saved by fellow detectives utilizing an AED.  Mr. Bartlett’s life was also saved in 2007 when rescue personnel used an AED after he suffered a heart attack. Mrs. Bartlett said, “This would just be a way that we can help police to help other people. I mean they see so many bad things that happen it's kind of nice to be able to present them with a good thing once in a while."  Police Chief James Cervera and EMS District Chief Bruce Nedelka graciously accepted the donation. The additional AEDs will be placed in police cruisers for officers answering calls for service.  In many cases police officers are the first responders to arrive on a rescue call. They save about five lives a year utilizing an AED.
