North Landing Bridge to Close for Emergency Repairs at 9 a.m. Today

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Beginning at 9:00 am on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, until approximately 5 p.m., the North Landing Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic.  The main gear that opens the bridge has broken two teeth.  This has limited the bridge from being fully opened, and in fact, only the Chesapeake span can open which limits water vessels a horizontal clearance of only 40 feet.

Using a crane barge, crews for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will cut into the bridge surface, remove the broken gear, replace the gear, replace the bridge surface, test and adjust the bridge.  During this time, the bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic as the crew will cut into the bridge surface, remove the broken gear, replace the gear, replace the bridge surface, and test and adjust the bridge.
