Remember to Call 811 Before You Dig

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

On 8/11 and throughout the year, the Virginia Beach Department of Public Utilities urges contractors and residents to call 811 (Miss Utility of Virginia) at least three business days prior to starting a project that requires excavation.  Miss Utility will then notify Public Utilities of the project and the department will send professional locators to the dig site to mark underground utility lines free of charge.

Whether you’re planting a tree or installing an inground pool, every digging project warrants a call to 811.  Last year, more than 170,000 underground utility lines across the U.S. were damaged because no one bothered to call 811. Striking a single line can result in fines, outages and serious injuries.

Visit www.missutilityofvirginia.com for more information about 811 and then call before you dig.
