VBgov.com Rated One of Virginia’s Top City Websites for Government Transparency

Friday, January 20, 2012

Virginia Beach’s official government website, VBgov.com, earned an A- for transparency by Sunshine Review, a nonprofit group dedicated to state and local government transparency. Thirty-nine city government websites in Virginia were rated based on 10 areas of public information that should be available on every government website:

  • Budgets
  • Public meeting schedule, minutes, agendas
  • Elected officials
  • Administrative officials
  • Building permits and zoning
  • Audits
  • Contracts
  • Lobbying
  • Public records
  • Taxes

Of those 39, only two other Virginia cities – Richmond and Alexandria – received an A-, which was the highest grade given by Sunshine Review to any Virginia city.

Virginia Beach Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. said, “We’re proud to be recognized as one of Virginia’s most open governments. Virginia Beach encourages and supports citizen engagement, and VBgov.com provides a wealth of information that enables citizens to stay informed about the workings of our city government and to get involved in the process.”
