VB Home Now Launches Matching Gift Campaign May 27 – June 30 to Benefit Virginia Beach Education Foundation Beach Bags Program

Wednesday, May 27, 2020

VB Home Now invites the community to join the effort to help food-insecure students by donating through its matching gift campaign to benefit the Virginia Beach Education Foundation's (VBEF) Beach Bags program. From May 27 through June 30, VB Home Now will match, dollar for dollar, all donations received at VBHomeNow.org, up to $30,000.

"Children cannot learn effectively if they're hungry or don't know where they will be sleeping from night to night," said VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. "Now more than ever, when this global health crisis has upended the normalcy of routines and threatened the safety of the school environment that some of our most vulnerable children depend upon, we are so grateful to VB Home Now for working to keep those students sheltered while helping us to keep them fed. These community partnerships are the foundation of building an equitable educational experience for every child."

According to VBEF, since the start of the COVID-19 health crisis and school closures, demand for the Beach Bags program has increased, as well as the food prices to fill the bags due to food scarcity.

"We are standing in the gap now and want to help. Food insecurity and housing instability are very much connected to each other. Our goal is to raise $60,000 as a community through this campaign – the equivalent of nearly 16,000 Beach Bags for children in need. Together, we can help provide immediate relief for families as we continue to develop and support long-term solutions that will stabilize housing for our neighbors most affected by COVID-19," said Ray Bjorkman, chairman of VB Home Now.

About the Virginia Beach Education Foundation's Beach Bags Program
Established in 2009, the Beach Bags program provides shelf-stable meals and healthy snacks to Virginia Beach City Public School (VBCPS) students that may otherwise go hungry during weekends, school breaks and summer vacation. School staff and the VBCPS Office of School Social Work Services work collaboratively to identify households in need.
