VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (May 24, 2020) — The annual Memorial Day Ceremony hosted by the Mayor's Veterans Committee, held at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial, was canceled earlier this spring. Governor Ralph Northam's Executive Order 53 prohibits public gatherings of more than 10 people to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

" We are extremely disappointed that we had to cancel this year's ceremony, stated Charlie Montgomery, chair of the Mayor's Veterans Committee. However, a wreath will be placed Monday morning at the Memorial, to pay tribute to all those that have perished."

In lieu of the ceremony, Mayor Robert M. "Bobby" Dyer has prepared a message to the community asking citizens to take time on Memorial Day to remember all the brave men and women, of the armed services, who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The message will be posted online tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.at YouTube.com/VirginiaBeachTV,  facebook.com/CityofVaBeachtwitter.com/CityofVaBeach and instagram.com/cityofvabeach. It will also appear on VBTV (Cox channel 48 and Verizon channel 47) several times throughout the day, beginning at 8 a.m.
