UPDATE: Clarification on Food Truck Operations Until June 1

Food trucks may operate in Virginia Beach with certain restrictions until June 1, 2020.

Can food trucks go into residential areas?

Yes, food trucks can go into residential areas to deliver pre-ordered food, much like other delivery drivers. They must be parked on private property (with permission of the property owner), and may finish and distribute their orders in an orderly manner with safe social distancing. They cannot accommodate walk-up customers and they cannot park in the street. It is important to not park in the street because of potential obstructions in the road due to the size of the food truck, which may conflict with residential streets.

Where can food trucks sell to walk-up customers?

Food trucks may locate on a non-residential property (with permission from the property owner) in a legal parking space. This allows for the public to park and safely distance themselves from each other, while providing the opportunity for food to those that may supplement their food supply and limit their travel.

Were food trucks permitted throughout the City before?

No, food trucks were not permitted throughout the City unless they were associated with an Open-Air Market or a special event. This allowance is to help supplement food supply during the health emergency and is only valid until June 1, 2020. The City will revisit the regulations governing food trucks at a later date.

Original News Release: Food Trucks May Operate in Non-Residential Areas with Restrictions Until June 1

​The City of Virginia Beach has authorized food trucks to operate within non-residential areas and with certain restrictions until June 1. As the safety of residents and limiting the spread of COVID-19 is paramount, food trucks must adhere to the following requirements:

  • Only locate on private property in non-residential areas, with the approval of the property owner.
  • Have all applicable approvals and certifications from the Health Department; and
  • May not be located on the public right-of-way and may not sell food from the street.
