The Sandler Center Hosts "Apprentice to Light: The West of Ireland” by Glen McClure March 5 through May 21

Tuesday, February 25, 2020

The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts and the Virginia Beach Cultural Affairs Department are delighted to announce the newest exhibition from artist Glen McClure, "Apprentice to Light: The West of Ireland," March 5 through May 21, 2020.

There will be a free artist reception at the Sandler Center on Monday, March 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. Signed copies of the artist's book, also titled "Apprentice to Light: The West of Ireland," will be available for purchase.

Born and living in Norfolk, Virginia, Glen McClure photographs people and landscapes in the U.S. and Europe. He purchased his first camera in his early 20s and then joined the Studio Center as a photographer's assistant. After working as a photographer at Arthur Polizos Advertising, he launched his own commercial photography business in 1988.

Influenced by early 20th-century photographers Josef Sudek and Paul Strand, McClure's work is recognized for masterful photographic techniques and for inviting strong and immediate connections between subject and viewer.

"My subjects call to me," said McClure. "Shape, texture, reflections – I'm fascinated by all these. But ultimately, it's mood, drama, atmosphere and feeling that I'm interested in conveying to the viewer. My completed works are my impressions or interpretations, after I've spent many hours back in my studio processing the images to successfully recapture the feeling and emotion of the original scene."

During the past two decades, McClure has had more than 70 solo and 50 group exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe. Fully illustrated catalogues have accompanied many of these exhibitions. His work can be found in many private collections and museums, including the Polaroid Collection, the Chrysler Museum, The Mariners' Museum, and the Taubman Museum.

The exhibit will be on view in the second- and third-floor lobbies from March 5 through May 21, 2020 during the Sandler Center's normal operating hours: Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or during any performance at the Sandler Center, 201 Market St., Virginia Beach.
