Celebrate History and Hearts This February at Virginia Beach Public Library

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Jan. 16, 2020) — Celebrate African American History Month and Valentine’s Day this February at Virginia Beach Public Library. Learn about the history and achievements of African Americans and use your creativity to make valentines for loved ones at one (or more) of several programs. Programs designed for children, teens and adults are available throughout the library’s 10 branches and may require registration. They include:

HISTORY MONTH

African American Film Series for Adults: Film #1

The series' first film features a dramatization of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 1965 march for voting rights in Alabama. Directed by Ava DuVernay and stars David Oyelowo, Oprah Winfrey, Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Alessandra Nivola. Rated PG-13. Adults 18+. Registration is not required. African American Genealogy

Learn techniques and discover tools to help you trace your roots. Adults 18+.

African American Film Series for Adults: Film #2

The series' second film follows a family whose vacation turns eerie when they meet and are terrorized by their twisted doppelgängers. Directed by Jordan Peele and stars Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker and Shahadi Wright-Joseph. Rated R. Adults 18+. Registration is not required. Cultural Harmony: Grades K-5

Come sing and learn about ways African American music has enriched our culture. Grades K-5. Registration is not required.

African American Film Series for Grades Six to Adult: Film #3

The series' final film is a documentary with footage of musical performances by Aretha Franklin at New Bethel Baptist Church in Watts, Los Angeles in 1972 during the recording of her best-selling, live gospel album. Appearances are made by Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts. Rated G. Grades six and up. Registration is not required. Learn more about this title here.

Black History Through Poetry and Prose

Explore stories told by black writers and share these stories through recordings and reading aloud during a discussion about the history of African American prose and poetry. Adults 18+.

Elementary Cookie Challenge: Valentine's Day Edition for Grades 3-5
