The City of Virginia Beach Information Technology Department has won a 2020 FutureEdge 50 award from IDG for the StormSense Project. IDG's CIO and the CIO Executive Council released the list of winners, which includes private and public sector organizations driving transformational cultures and visionary leadership. Nominees were judged on innovation, complexity, scale and business value.

"It's an ideal time to be in the technology industry," said Peter Wallace, the City's chief information officer. "The pace of advancement is making way for some truly revolutionary products and services. StormSense has the potential to transform how cities respond to flooding and sea level rise on a local, regional, national and global level. We will continue to push the boundaries of innovation, grow our ecosystem of partners and prepare our city for the future of business."

StormSense is an integrated network of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors which leverages several emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud services to deliver real-time flood data every six minutes to citizens, first responders, researchers and other stakeholders. The project seeks to mitigate the effects of flooding and sea level rise while creating more resilient communities.

"The organizations in the FutureEdge 50 are doing exciting things that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago," said Anne McCrory, group vice president, customer experience and operations, events, and the FutureEdge and AGENDA20 conference chair. "For example, there's a project using blockchain and quantum computing to establish trust; an indoor navigation system; and many uses of AI/ML for insights and efficiency. We are honored to showcase these innovations and many others as we enter into a new era of sophistication with cloud, devices and environments powering the technology-driven business."

FutureEdge 50 award recipients will be recognized during the AGENDA20 conference March 23-25, 2020 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The annual event assembles more than 250 senior IT and business leaders to discover and discuss the most effective technology solutions for shared challenges.
