Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Hosting Event to Celebrate 5th Anniversary of SOS

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is hosting a luncheon to celebrate five successful years of the Students on the Swim (SOS) program. SOS launched as a pilot program at Williams Farm Recreation Center in the 2014/2015 school year with three Title I elementary schools and has grown to now 30 participating schools and over 7100 students served. The program provides two weeks of free swim lessons and water safety instruction to second graders through a partnership with Virginia Beach Public Schools and funded by donations from the Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Foundation​.

What: Supporters of the SOS program, including donors and council members, are invited to commemorate the five-year anniversary of the program with a light luncheon and the opportunity to observe a lesson and meet current participants from Luxford Elementary School.

Remarks to be made by Michael Kirschman, director of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation, followed by Dr. Aaron Spence, superintendent of Virginia Beach Public Schools, Walter Camp from the Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Foundation, and Rosemary Wilson, councilwoman with Virginia Beach City Council.

When: Wednesday, October 9, 2019, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
