*Update* Traffic Shutdown on Independence after Fatal Crash

The decedents have been identified as:

45-year-old Pasquale DeStasio of Virginia Beach

28-year-old Estherlyne​ Stein of Virginia Beach

The preliminary investigation has revealed that two vehicles (a sedan and a van) were in the westbound lanes of Pembroke Blvd at the intersection of Independence Blvd. Both vehicles were proceeding into the intersection on a green light when a Honda sedan (being operated by Stein) was travelling northbound on Independence Blvd,  s​truck the sedan causing it to hit the van.​

The drivers of both sedan's were pronounced deceased, the driver of the van sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash.  No charges are pending on the driver of the van.

On Friday, September 20, 2019 at 6:00 AM Emergency Services received a call for service for a crash involving someone pinned inside a vehicle at the intersection of Independence Blvd and Pembroke Blvd. When police arrived, there were 3 vehicles involved and 3 injured people. One of the injured was deceased on scene, another was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased at the hospital, and the 3rd was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. This case is still in the early stages of the investigation and police are interviewing witnesses. This case is being worked by the Fatal Crash Team.

Traffic on Independence Boulevard will be affected for several hours while police conduct the investigation. All northbound traffic on Independence Boulevard from Independence Circle to Haygood Road is shutdown. All southbound traffic from Pembroke Boulevard to Witchduck Road is shutdown.
