Virginia Beach Continues Yard Debris Collections

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

Waste Management has shifted resources as crews continue to collect normal yard waste following Hurricane Dorian. Waste Management is utilizing two types of trucks for yard debris collection. Manual collection will be used to collect bagged yard debris, while mechanical boom trucks are being deployed to assist with woody debris.

"Our City was very were fortunate to not have been adversely impacted by Dorian," said spokeswoman Kristi Rines. "Because our area received high winds rather than catastrophic damage, Waste Management will not be relaxing yard debris regulations."

What this means for residents:

  1. Waste Management did not receive FEMA Disaster Funding that would have allowed for the City to expand its collection capabilities via contractors. Therefore, we will not collect tree debris or piles significantly out of regulation.
  2. Please do not place any out-of-regulation yard debris at the curb, as this cannot be collected. Limbs cannot exceed 4 feet long and 6 inches in diameter.
  3. Residents are encouraged to please make one or two large piles, rather than multiple small piles, as this allows for crews to be more efficient when collecting yard debris. Two piles, generated from each house, will be collected. Pile(s) cannot exceed 4 x 4 x 4 feet.
  4. Due to the volume of material, residents can expect delays in yard waste collection and may notice yard waste trucks in their neighborhood on different days other than their trash day.
  5. Please Note: Any work that is done by private contractors must be disposed of by the contractor.
  6. For operational efficiency, Waste Management does not provide "broom service" as this would slow down the service to the 126,000 homes. Residents shall be responsible for collection and proper disposal of the small twigs and leaves that fall from yard debris piles.

For larger amounts of yard debris, yard waste containers are available for rent. Please call Waste Management to schedule a delivery.

The Virginia Beach Landfill and Resource Recovery Center, located at 1989 Jake Sears Road, is available to Virginia Beach residents for a wide range of recycling and disposal needs. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
