Tuesday, September 10, 2019

The City of Virginia Beach Information Technology (IT) Department received three Governor's Technology Awards (GTA) for transforming service delivery and government experience. The GTA program focuses on public sector initiatives that introduce greater efficiency and business value through the strategic use of IT. City projects were recognized in the following categories:

The VB Connect voice app was recognized in the IT as an Efficiency Driver – Government to Citizen category. The app offers citizens easy access to City information on Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant-powered devices. Residents can use simple voice commands to get information about City events, job listings, council meetings, voting districts and more. The app has won three awards since its September 2018 release.

The City's Traffic Data-Sharing Partnership won in the Innovative Use of Big Data and Analytics category for its innovative approach to citizen safety during planned and unplanned events. Part of the Waze Connected Citizens Program, the free, two-way data share delivers real-time government-reported and crowd-sourced information to empower citizens, commuters, visitors and first responders with a holistic view of road conditions. The project seeks to strengthen traffic management, improve mobility and enhance citizen experience.

Virginia Beach was also acknowledged in the Cross-Boundary Collaboration category for its participation in the regional StormSense project. Other partners in the multijurisdictional flood mitigation initiative include the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and the cities of Newport News, Norfolk and Portsmouth.

City of Virginia Beach representatives attended the GTA ceremony, which was held during the Commonwealth of Virginia Innovative Technology Symposium (COVITS) conference on Sept. 5 in Richmond, Virginia. COVITS is an annual event where state and local leaders convene to celebrate technology-driven innovation, share best practices and accelerate organizational goals.
