On Tuesday, June 9th at 12:40 pm, Virginia Beach
Emergency Communications received a report of a possible drowning incident in
the 4000 block of Sandpiper Road.
Emergency personnel responded to the False Cape area where it was learned that a group with a summer camp was on an
outing when a few of the students entered the water. Two adults with the group and a nearby
fisherman saw the students in the water begin to struggle, so they went in to
assist. As the students made it safely back to shore, it was realized that
one of the adults had not resurfaced. A multi-agency search, to include members
from the Virginia Beach Police, Fire and Rescue along with the U.S. Coast
Guard, was initiated to locate the individual. Exhaustive, but unsuccessful
efforts were spent, and the search was ultimately called off at approximately
7:00 pm due to the rough water conditions.
Search and Rescue crews continued with their recovery efforts
throughout the week and on Sunday, July 14, 2019 at approximately 2:15 pm, a body, presumed to be that of
the missing swimmer, was recovered in the ocean near False Cape. Positive identification will be made by the
Medical Examiners’ Office.
