VA Beach Public Works Announces Detours to Begin at Indian River-Kempsville Intersection

Thursday, July 11, 2019

The City of Virginia Beach is in the process of constructing intersection improvements at the intersection of Indian River Road and Kempsville Road.  Construction is now at the stage where the first phase of detours will be required for traffic turning left at the intersection.

Beginning Wednesday, July 17th, left turns from EASTBOUND and WESTBOUND Indian River Road onto Kempsville Road WILL BE ELIMINATED.  Left turns from Kempsville Road directly onto Indian River road will remain in place.

  • When traveling east from I-64 along Indian River Road there are two options to turn left onto northbound Kempsville Road:
Option 1: Before reaching Kempsville Road, turn left onto Kemps River Drive, proceed to Kempsville Road and turn left.

Option 2: Before reaching Kempsville Road, turn left at onto Center Lane, turn right onto Fordham Drive, proceed to Kemps River Drive, turn right, then turn left onto Kempsville Road.

  • When traveling towards I-64 along Indian River Road westbound, to turn left onto southbound Kempsville Rd, proceed through the Kempsville Road intersection, make a U-turn at the temporary signal at Lila Lane, proceed back to Kempsville Road, then turn right.
  • Large trucks may experience difficulty with the U-turn at the temporary signal and should proceed along the marked truck detour route.

Along this route, travel through the Kempsville Road intersection to Kemps River Drive, turn right, then proceed to Kempsville Road and turn right; then proceed along Kempsville Road through the Indian River Road intersection.

This phase of work is expected to last approximately 10 weeks.  All work is weather permitting.

All drivers are encouraged to exercise extra caution and patience as this work proceeds so as to maintain a safe environment.
