Virginia Beach Fire Department Hosts German Firefighters at the Oceanfront

Thursday, June 20, 2019

What started as a bicycle tour across four European cities for ten German Volunteer Firefighters has ended with a stop in Virginia Beach.  Our visitors are from the city of Waiblingen which is in the Stuttgart region of Germany.  So what's that got to do with Virginia Beach?  Plenty, Waiblingen is our newest "sister-city" and it is also the world headquarters for STIHL which operates a large manufacturing facility in Virginia Beach.  There is more to this story and how VBFD became involved in the visit to the "Resort City".  One of the 10 German Firefighters is employed with STIHL in Waiblingen.  Since STIHL has been a steadfast corporate partner of the VBFD they reached out to us to welcome our fellow firefighters from Germany.

Their journey through the US began in New York where they got back on the bicycles to ride through a few other cities along the east coast to solidify the fellowship between firefighters from around the globe and serve as an example of positive cooperation and global citizenship. A journey that ultimately led them to Virginias Beach.  After an official welcome ceremony yesterday at the STIHL factory located off the Lynnhaven Parkway, the German Firefighters came to the Virginia Beach Fire Training Center where they are staying until their departure this weekend.  Tomorrow, they will visit Company 11 at the oceanfront.  Their visit is scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday and the media is invited to attend and meet our visitors.  If you wish to attend, please RSVP to Art Kohn by 10 a.m., Friday morning, June 21.
