City Sponsoring Disparity Study Forum May 22

Disparity Study Forum: Fighting the Disparity | Council Member Sabrina Wooten Hosting

Friday, May 17, 2019

Fighting the Disparity is a forum being hosted by Council Member Sabrina Wooten that reviews the findings of the City's recent disparity study and discusses recommendations being considered or already in the works. The event will be held Wednesday, May 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sandler Center, 101 Market St. It is free and open to the public.

"This is an enormously important issue, not just for the City but for our community and I want to provide our residents with as much information as possible about what the study found and what steps we are taking to fight the disparity," said Wooten.

Last year, the City hired BBC Research & Consulting to independently review the City's contracting efforts and availability of potential minority and women-owned firms to receive contracts. Dr. Sameer Bawa, the principal consultant on the project, will first provide an overview of findings of the study. Then, a panel of participants will field questions from the audience. The panel includes Rebecca Kee, City of Virginia Beach purchasing agent; Taylor Adams, Economic Development interim director; Lavera Tolentino, City of Virginia Beach minority business coordinator; Donna Whitaker, managing partner with Venture Realty Group; Chris Stone, PE, chief executive officer with ClarkNexsen, and; A. Bruce Williams with the Virginia Beach African American Political Action Council.
