Virginia Beach Information Technology Department Wins 2019 CIO 100 Award

The City’s first digital assistant app earns prestigious business and technology honor

Wednesday, May 01, 2019

IDG's CIO has announced the City of Virginia Beach Information Technology (IT) Department as the recipient of a 2019 CIO 100 award. The 32nd annual awards program recognizes organizations around the world for elevating innovation and delivering business value. This win marks the city's second consecutive CIO 100 award.

"Across the business landscape, companies everywhere recognize the vital role that an innovative, value-driven approach to information technology plays in their success," said Maryfran Johnson, IDG's Executive Director of CIO Programs. "This year's CIO 100 winning companies are inspiring examples of how IT leadership, business collaboration and digital transformation will drive future growth."

VB Connect, the city's first digital assistant app, is at the heart of this honor. The app was launched in September 2018 and offers citizens voice-activated access to City information on Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant platforms. From their preferred smart device, users can inquire about news, events, property information, voting district locations, waste collection schedules and more. The rising popularity of voice assistants and smart speakers makes VB Connect's voice technology capabilities a guidepost for how the City will continue to elevate government-citizen communication in the future.

"The CIO 100 Awards program is highly competitive," said Peter Wallace, the city's chief information officer. "To be acknowledged two years in a row by a program of this caliber is a phenomenal achievement that speaks to the ingenuity and capacity of our employees. Our mantra, 'people first, technology second,' drives the results we produce. When people come first, success will follow."

The IT Department will join other winning organizations during the CIO 100 Symposium and Awards Ceremony, which will be held Aug. 19-21, 2019 at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

About the CIO 100 Awards
The annual CIO 100 Awards celebrate 100 organizations and the teams within them that are using IT in innovative ways to deliver business value, whether by creating competitive advantage, optimizing business processes, enabling growth or improving relationships with customers. The award is an acknowledged mark of enterprise excellence. Recipients are selected through a three-step process. First, companies fill out an online application form detailing an innovative IT and business initiative. Next, a team of external judges (many of them former CIOs) reviews the applications in depth, looking for leading-edge IT practices and measurable results. Finally, CIO editors review the judges' recommendations and select the final 100. Coverage of the 2019 CIO 100 Awards will be available online at CIO.com in August 2019 and in the summer issue of CIO's digital magazine.
