Virginia Beach Convention Center Welcomes March

Friday, March 01, 2019

March is a month most Virginia Beach locals yearn for thanks to the onset of daylight savings time (DST). But did you know that DST actually started out as a joke back in 1784? It was Benjamin Franklin who wrote a satirical letter to the editor of The Journal of Paris outlining how many pounds of candlewax could be saved if only its clocks better aligned with the rise and set of the sun (according to Franklin's calculations, the savings would exceed 64,000,000 pounds!). It wasn't until almost a century later that the practice was taken seriously. And for those living in a coastal beach destination like Virginia Beach, a huge "thank you" is due Mr. Franklin!

Fast forward to the here and now - let's see what is moving and shaking at the Virginia Beach Convention Center (VBCC) this March:

Mar. 3:  2019 Rescue Squad Benefit Oyster Roast   The 43rd Annual Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad Oyster Roast and Craft Beer Festival is the organization's largest fundraiser of the year. Enjoy local craft beer and oysters cooked three different ways along with barbeque, chicken and all the sides during this locals' favorite charitable event. Children's activities, a silent auction, casino tables, raffles and a live band rounds out this afternoon of fun. Tickets may be purchased here. Children ages six and under are free.

Mar. 8 - 10: The Treasures of the Earth Jewelry Show   This gem, mineral and jewelry show is another locals' favorite and features estate, classic, handcrafted and fashion jewelry made from a variety of metals, as well as a vast array of crystals, minerals and fossils. Jewelers and wire wrappers will be on-site who can design, remount or repair jewelry. In addition, there will be a gemologist present to do appraisals while you wait. A discount coupon on general admission may be found here.

Mar. 15 - 16: Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend Virginia Beach is known for its fun and unique marathons and this weekend's offerings are no different. This two-day event will be celebrating St. Patrick's Day with runners, walkers and sports enthusiasts of all types. The weekend kicks off with the Shamrock Sports and Fitness Expo, one of the largest on the East Coast. The vendors at the Expo will offer a wide variety of equipment, apparel, footwear and accessories for the whole family, including official Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend gear. The Shamrock Sports and Fitness Expo is FREE and open to everyone. To participate in one of the athletic events, click here.

Mar. 22 – 24: 2019 Virginia Beach Spring Craft Market – Just like DST, nothing screams "spring is here!" like the beginning of this beloved craft market which is celebrating its 33rd year. The Virginia Beach Spring Craft Market features over 150 fine artists and craftspeople from across the nation offering fine arts, handcrafted jewelry, wood, glass, photography, candles, woven baskets, clothing, toys, folk art and specialty foods.
