In 1991, Concerned Citizens Advocating Traffic Safety instituted the JOHN T. HANNA AWARD. Named after Virginia’s “Father of Transportation Safety” these awards honor those who share Mr. Hanna’s tireless dedication and commitment to improving traffic safety on Virginia's highways.
John T. Hanna remains the cornerstone of transportation safety, as we know it today. The unparalleled zeal for safety that hallmark his career is an inspiration to every parent police officer, judge teacher and citizen who is committed to saving lives through traffic safety.
Master Police Officer Eriald Kera on the Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit has been selected Drive Safe Hampton Roads as the recipient of the 2018 John T. Hanna Award for Law Enforcement Initiatives by an Individual. Officer Kera received a plaque memorializing the award at the organization’s annual award ceremony on January 30, 2019 at the Princess Anne Country Club.
Officer Kera was recognized as a result of his individual efforts to promote traffic safety in the through a variety of citizen education and prevention programs, the aggressive detection and apprehension of impaired drivers, and the enforcement of traffic laws in the City of Virginia Beach. Officer Kera has continually led the city and the region in enforcement efforts relating to impaired driving. “Mothers against Drunk Driving” (MADD) recognized Kera for having the highest number of driving under the influence arrests in Southeast Virginia for calendar year 2017. For the 12 months preceding the Hanna Award submission, Officer Kera led the Police Department with 137 arrests for Driving under the Influence.
Officer Kera also supports the Police Department’s efforts by author and coordinating multiple saturation patrols to focus traffic enforcement efforts in those areas most in need. These efforts have led to documented reductions in vehicle crashes in those areas of focus.
He assists in educating the public on traffic safety through the delivery of the Department’s Driving Safety Lecture Program. This program is provided to military personnel as a part of their annual “safety stand-downs.” During the past year, Officer Kera personally provided 18 military safety lectures educating hundreds of soldiers, sailors, and civilians on the hazards of drunk, aggressive, and distracted driving. Kera is also instrumental in participating in the “Every Fifteen Minutes” program which selects two local high schools each year to provide dynamic instruction on the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.
Officer Kera’s hard work and dedication has made him a standout in the area of traffic safety within not only the City of Virginia Beach, but the entire southeast region of Virginia. He is most deserving of the 2018 John T. Hanna Award for Law Enforcement Initiatives by an Individual.
