Special Formal Session of Virginia Beach City Council Scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 20

Mayor-Elect Dyer and Council Member-Elect Wooten to Take Oaths of Office

Thursday, November 15, 2018

The Virginia Beach City Council will hold a special formal session on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m., one hour ahead of its already scheduled meeting, to administer the oath of office to Mayor-Elect Bobby Dyer and appoint Council Member–Elect Sabrina Wooten to fill the unexpired term of the seat Dyer is vacating as the Centerville district representative. Following the appointment, Wooten will take the oath of office. The Honorable Tina E. Sinnen, Clerk, Virginia Beach Circuit Court, will administer the oaths. The meeting is open to the public and will be followed by a short reception. The proceedings also will be live-streamed and cablecast. It can be viewed on www.VBgov.com, Facebook (www.facebook.com/CityofVaBeach) and on VBTV (Cox channel 48; Verizon channel 45).

Mayor-elect Dyer previously submitted a letter of resignation from the seat he holds as the representative of the Centerville district, effective Dec. 31, in order to run for mayor. Having prevailed in that election, Dyer has now updated his resignation to be effective at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 19. Dyer will serve until Dec. 31, 2020, filling the unexpired term of former Mayor Will Sessoms, who resigned in April.

Ms. Wooten was elected to serve for the remainder of Mr. Dyer's term of office commencing on Jan. 1, 2019. City Council is expected to appoint Council Member-Elect Wooten to serve as the representative of the Centerville district for the remainder of 2018. She then will serve the term for which she was elected starting Jan. 1.

The City will hold an Oath of Office ceremony and reception on Jan. 8, 2019 for all newly elected City Council representatives.
