Commonwealth v. Anthony Dwayne August; Man to Serve 25 Years for Sexual Abuse of Child

Tuesday, October 23, 2018

Colin D. Stolle, Commonwealth's Attorney for the city of Virginia Beach, announced that Anthony Dwayne August, 27 years old, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, pled guilty and was sentenced today for charges of Forcible Sodomy – Victim Under Age 13 and Custodial Indecent Liberties.   Pursuant to a plea agreement, Circuit Court Judge William R. O'Brien sentenced August to 75 years in prison with fifty (50) years suspended leaving 25 years to serve.  This sentence is about twice the high-end of the recommendation of the Virginia State Sentencing Guidelines.

Had this matter gone to trial, the Commonwealth's evidence would have proven that between December 1, 2016, and December 31, 2017, Anthony Dwayne August sexually abused a young child known to him.  A short time after, the victim reported the abuse to a trusted family member.  When detectives interviewed August, he admitted to the sexual abuse of the victim.  He also wrote two apology letters.
