Officer Involved Shooting / 35th Street

UPDATE​

Additional details regarding the officer-involved incident that occurred in the dark early morning hours of Tuesday, September 18. Detectives are continuing the investigation to include retrieving surveillance video footage from surrounding businesses as well as the apartment complex.

Below is a photograph of the weapon Murphy pointed at the officers during the encounter, the investigation has revealed that this handgun is a realistic looking BB-gun that resembles a Century Arms 9mm.

The decedent is identified as 43-year-old Michael James Murphy of Norfolk.

The following details regarding the Officer Involved Shooting have become available to release:

The female victim was struck multiple times by the suspect with a metal object resulting in serious injuries. At this time those injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

A citizen/G​ood Samaritan who witnessed the attack did try to intervene. This witness armed himself with a long gun but did not discharge it.

The officer who discharged his service weapon was not wearing a body camera, as they have not yet been issued to second precinct officers. This officer has been placed on administrative duty per policy pending the outcome of the three pronged investigation.

The identity of the suspect/decedent will be released after next of kin notification has been made.​


On Tuesday, September 18th 2018 at approximately 1:38 a.m. Virginia Beach Emergency Communications received a call regarding a domestic disturbance at the Mayflower Apartments located at 205 34th Street.

A caller advised that when he heard what was believed to be a domestic disturbance, he looked into the hallway and observed a male suspect assaulting a female victim.

The suspect fled the apartment complex on foot, crossing Pacific Avenue.  A witness flagged officers down as they arrived on scene, alerting them which way the suspect was running, a description of the suspect, and that the suspect was armed with a gun.

Officers observed the suspect in the 300 block of 35th Street with a gun.

Officers gave verbal commands for the suspect to drop the weapon.  he did not comply, and pointed his gun at the officers. 

One of the officers responded to the deadly force situation by discharging his firearm, striking the suspect. The suspect was pronounced deceased on scene.

The female victim of the assault was transported to a local hospital. The extent of her injuries is unknown at this time.

This will be a three tiered investigation, that is being conducted by the Departments Investigative Division/Homicide Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney.

This is a very active investigation, additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
