Celebrate Parks & Rec Month in July with Free Family Fun from Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation

Thursday, June 21, 2018

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation (VBPR) is celebrating Parks & Recreation Month by inviting residents into the recreation centers for free Family Fun Nights this July. Each center, with the exception of Kempsville, will open its doors for a night of swimming, games, fitness classes, giveaways, and the chance for little ones to meet the new VBPR mascot, Barks & Rex! The events are free and open to the public, but registration is required. The first 150 people who register will receive a swag bag full of VBPR goodies.

The activities at each center will vary in an effort to showcase some of the unique programming that is available at the center in those communities, such as Ludosports lightsaber combat training at Great Neck. Residents are encouraged to attend multiple Family Fun Nights to experience all of these offerings. Those who register and attend three or more of the events will be entered into a raffle to win either a free annual membership or two free personal training sessions.

For those who prefer to spend time outdoors in the summer sun during Parks & Recreation Month, the department suggests visiting a park or natural area that they haven't been to before. The VB ParkFinder app is free to download and offers features to filter all of the Virginia Beach park sites by amenities and navigate to them via GPS.

"Great cities have great park systems, and great parks systems help make cities great," said Michael Kirschman, Director of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation. "Since the creation of our first formal park in 1966 (Red Wing Park) our community now has over 290 city parks which impact our community in countless ways every day. From improving the health and wellness of residents, to providing places to play sports, picnic, fly kites, skateboard, spend time at a playground, fish, or just enjoy the outdoors, our parks play a central role in the quality of life in Virginia Beach. I hope everyone has the opportunity to celebrate Parks & Recreation Month by visiting a park or recreation center and making memories for a lifetime, he added."

All throughout July, VBPR wants residents to become more aware of the incredible facilities, programs, and parks that there are to explore. Family Fun Nights will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with locations scheduled as follows:

Monday, July 9 | Williams Farm
Friday, July 13 | Bow Creek
Monday, July 16 | Bayside
Friday, July 20 | Princess Anne
Monday, July 23 | Seatack
Friday, July 27 | Great Neck
