U.S. Justice Department OKs Virginia Beach Redistricting Plan

Wednesday, November 02, 2011

In a letter received yesterday by the City of Virginia Beach, the U.S. Department of Justice said it has no objections to the recently redrawn City Council and School Board candidate residence districts.

The Virginia Beach City Council adopted new residence district boundaries on Aug. 23, as required, using population data from the 2010 Census. As part of the redistricting process, city staff and the City Council held numerous public meetings and hearings.  The plan approved on Aug. 23 was one of a dozen redistricting alternatives, including several submitted by the public.

While the residence district boundaries have changed, all voters in the city retain the right to vote for all positions on the City Council and the School Board.

The first City Council election reflecting the new districts will be held in November 2012.
