Virginia Beach Debuts “The Senior Source” Pilot TV Show

New Show to Feature Topics of Interest to the Seniors Community

Thursday, May 31, 2018

The City of Virginia Beach is piloting a new television show featuring City programs and services for seniors on VBTV, Sunday, June 3. "The Senior Source," hosted by local television personality Sandra Parker, will provide viewers with information on an array of topics essential to those 55 and better and their families.

More than one-fourth of the population in Virginia Beach is made up of seniors aged 55 and over. "The Senior Source" show and a new page on the VBgov.com website dedicated to seniors aims to inform and direct them to the City programs and resources to help them in their daily lives.

The idea for the show came from long-time Virginia Beach resident and former Human Services Director Terry Jenkins, who saw the need to increase awareness of everything Virginia Beach has to offer its seniors. She teamed up with Parker, pitched the idea for the show, and the Communications Office signed on to produce it. Parker is volunteering her time and talent to serve as host.

"There's a real need to help seniors learn what they can do to keep healthy, stay active, and take advantage of all the City has to offer," said Jenkins. "We'll cover all sorts of topics, from health and wellness to finances and activities," said Parker, who was a reporter and news anchor for WVEC for 26 years before retiring. She now works for Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay. "My job offers me insights into the needs and interests of our seniors and I'm looking forward to making this show an important and growing part of our community."

The pilot episode of the show includes segments on the City's tax relief programs for seniors, the Parks & Recreation Forever Young Senior Centers, and some free opportunities available through the public libraries. Future episodes will focus on other topics important to seniors such as health and wellness, recreational activities, support services and housing information.

A new episode will debut on VBTV (Cox channel 48, Verizon channel 45) every other month on the first Sunday at 8:30 a.m., and will replay at additional times throughout the week. New episodes are set for Aug. 5, Oct. 7 and Dec. 2, 2018. You can also find the show on our Facebook page and YouTube Channel

The City would like to hear from viewers about what they think of the show and their suggestions for future topics to cover. Send your input and ideas to news@vbgov.com.
