Man Injured in Residential Fire

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

At around 10:30 Tuesday night, units from the Virginia Beach Fire Department along with Engine 4 from Norfolk Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a residence in the 5500 block of Whirlaway Road in the Carolanne Farms section of the city.  The first unit on the scene reported heavy smoke coming from the first floor of the two-story home.  They also found a man sitting on the ground outside the house suffering from burns to the face and smoke inhalation.  VBEMS transported the man to the hospital for treatment.  The fire was under control in 12 minutes and declared out 30-minutes later.

Virginia Beach Fire Investigators have determined that the fire was intentionally set.   Today investigators charged 31-year old Ryan Pipkin of Virginia Beach for arson to an occupied dwelling in connection with this fire.  Pipkin is in custody at the Virginia Beach Jail.  No firefighters were injured and no other houses were affected by the fire.
