Residents Invited to Share Ideas on Entertainment District Development

Planning Workshop Set for March 15

Tuesday, March 06, 2018

Residents are encouraged to attend a planning workshop Thursday, March 15, to discuss the projects under consideration in the City's Entertainment District. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center (1000 19th St.).

The Entertainment District is the area between 14th and 20th streets bounded by the oceanfront and Birdneck Rd. The projects on tap for discussion are:

  • Sports Center – development of an indoor sports facility located across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center, to capture more of the growing sports tourism and out-of-market tournament business, as well as host some local league sports play. It would be paid for using Tourism Investment Program (TIP) funds.
  • Dome Site Project – development of land located between 18th and 20th streets, bordered by Pacific and Artic avenues. The site concept is for a mixed-use, family-friendly destination with year-round programming to include a performance venue, new-to-market retail and restaurants, state-of-the-art surf park, and office and residential space. This element of the workshop will follow up on the input received at the Jan. 31 Dome Site public planning workshop and from a public survey that gathered data from more than 2,500 participants and received 1,400 comments.
  • Pier Project – development of a new, concrete public pier that would be an extension of the public boardwalk, replacing the existing private wooden pier. It would be built using TIP funds to spur private investments in retail, entertainment, restaurants, hotels and other activities on and around the pier.
  • Central Beach Parking – plans for parking that supports these projects and other destinations in the Entertainment District.

The focus of the Entertainment District is to create a variety of family-friendly amenities that offer year-round entertainment and activity options for residents and visitors alike.

Attend the workshop to learn more about the projects and provide input about the site layouts, land use and retail mix, public amenities and programming.

Please take a moment to take this short survey regarding the Entertainment District. The survey asks for your input about the features and amenities you might like to see in a public pier and how you might use a sports center. While the pier could be built anywhere between 5th and 40th streets, it would be considered an addition to the entertainment amenities located in the resort.

The survey will be open for input through March 30, 2018
