Monday, January 22, 2018

On Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, Bank On Hampton Roads will hold a regional graduation for approximately 20 Bank On Norfolk, Bank On Portsmouth and Bank On Virginia Beach participants. The cities have collaborated to create Bank On Hampton Roads to ensure every citizen has access to trusted financial information and support as they build stronger financial practices. The ceremony will take place at the Virginia Beach Campus of Tidewater Community College in the Student Center from 10 – 11:30 a.m. family and friends of the graduates are encouraged to attend.

The graduates began the 10-month-long journey in April 2017. Along with monthly classes, participants have received personalized mentoring from volunteer coaches in the community and have been required to complete homework assignments allowing them to demonstrate improvements in income, debt reduction, credit score improvements and savings. Participants also learn to build a basic financial plan for themselves and families including written goals with specific measurements for achievement and timelines for completion.

Participants in the Bank On program receive instruction on a variety of financial topics from banking, budgeting, goal setting, credit development, debt management, saving for emergencies, periodic expenses/repairs, larger expenses and retirement, asset and identify protection, insurance and estate planning.

Bank On Virginia Beach is part of the Mayor's Action Challenge established by Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. in 2011 to inspire citizens to take positive action to improve their financial fitness. Graduates of this program receive mayoral recognition for demonstrated improvements in income, savings, debt reduction and improvements to credit score.

Coordinated through the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services, Bank On Virginia Beach is a partnership of participating banks, credit unions, and community organizations designed to connect unbanked and under-banked families to free or low cost bank accounts and other resources leading to financial freedom. Through an array of coordinated services, the Department of Human Services provides Virginia Beach citizens the opportunity to achieve the highest level of self-sufficiency, safety, and quality of life possible.
