City Manager Dave Hansen has appointed Mark Johnson interim director of Public Works for the City of Virginia Beach effective January 1, 2018, following the retirement of Public Works Director Phil Davenport.

Mark is a 33-year veteran of the City who started his career as a project manager in Public Utilities. Four years later, Mark moved to Public Works and has been promoted through the ranks to his current position of operations engineer, responsible for the department's major operating areas, including stormwater, street maintenance, traffic management, beach operations and engineering/technical support.

"Mark's expertise, level-headed approach and commitment to making Virginia Beach better has earned him the respect of colleagues, citizens and our elected officials," said Hansen.  "He has considerable experience with coastal operations and tidal impacts, stormwater management, and recurrent flooding problems. With his leadership, we will continue to make progress in tackling these issues while making sure our transportation infrastructure, public buildings and maintenance keeps pace with the community's needs."

Mark is a licensed professional engineer with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology from Old Dominion University and a Master's certificate in project management from The George Washington University.
