Thursday, November 09, 2017

Several hundred new pieces of art have been completed by SkillQuest Program participants and are on display in the Fleming Gallery at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).  The exhibit opened Saturday, Oct. 21 and will continue through Monday, Nov. 13.  For almost two decades, SkillQuest has partnered with MOCA to exhibit the artwork of participants with intellectual disabilities.

On Monday, Nov. 13 from 6 – 8 p.m., the artists will be on hand to meet and greet the public at the annual dessert reception.  This free event will include:

  • Silent Art Auction of older art pieces
  • Buy it Now Sale of new works which include painting, pottery and mixed media
  • Seaside Sundries Boutique featuring many new kinds of beautiful handmade items available for purchase for the first time
  • Acoustic music by local artist Skip Friel

Only cash or checks will be accepted for the purchase of items.

All artwork and Seaside Sundries products are handmade by participants at SkillQuest, a day activity program for adults with intellectual disabilities.  Administered by the city's Department of Human Services, Development Services Division, SkillQuest provides training and support in the areas of communication, socialization, academics, independent living, gross and fine motor development behavior management, leisure skills and community exploration.
