Virginia Beach Housing Resource Center Receives $250,000 Donation from Charles Barker Automotive Employees

Wednesday, October 18, 2017

On Oct. 12, Mayor William D. Sessoms Jr., joined Pastor Ray Bjorkman, chair of VB Home Now, to accept a $250,000 donation given by Charles Barker Automotive employees through the Champions for Kids foundation. The donation will support the Virginia Beach Housing Resource Center, a one-stop-shop of essential services, housing and shelter for homeless and at-risk families and individuals.

The Housing Resource Center will provide housing and shelter for families, single adults and youth; supportive services; a health clinic; learning center and other community resources in one facility, making it the first of its kind in the region. The $30 million center is under construction at 104 N. Witchduck Road, near Southern Boulevard, and is expected to open this spring.

The City of Virginia Beach is paying the full cost of construction and most of the facility's operating costs. The Champions for Kids donation to VB Home Now will be used to directly help homeless and at-risk families and individuals with education, training, transportation, health care, security deposits and rent.

"During the 2016-17 school year, more than 800 students in Virginia Beach were homeless or at-risk. The donation will help this much-needed facility provide a safe place for many of those families early next year," said Bjorkman.

"The Housing Resource Center will help many homeless families and individuals in Virginia Beach," said Charles Barker, owner, Charles Barker Automotive and chair of Champions for Kids.  "Cars are our business, but kids are our future."

VB Home Now is a new nonprofit foundation that was formed in 2015 to support and enhance the Virginia Beach community system of services, programs and facilities to make homelessness rare, brief and nonrecurring. Its mission is to mobilize the community to help the neediest among us. The foundation achieves its mission by raising funds, accepting gifts and providing other resources in order to fill gaps in our community. For more information, visit www.vbhomenow.org.
