Commonwealth v. Michael Antonio Johnson; Hotel Robbery by Defendant with Lengthy Record Draws 14-Year Prison Sentence

Monday, October 16, 2017

Colin D. Stolle, Commonwealth's Attorney for the city of Virginia Beach, announced that Michael Antonio Johnson, 29 years old, formerly of the 1000 block of Bells Mill Road in Chesapeake, Virginia, was sentenced today by Circuit Court Judge William R. O'Brien for Robbery, Use of a Firearm, Wearing of Mark or Hood to Conceal Identity, and Conspiracy.  Judge O'Brien sentenced him to 30 years in prison, with 16 years suspended, leaving 14 years to serve.

Judge O'Brien found Johnson guilty after a trial on June 21, 2017.  The Commonwealth's evidence proved that on November 24, 2016, Michael Johnson entered the Travelodge at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront and asked about room pricing then left.  About 20 minutes later, Johnson and another male came back into the hotel with bandanas covering their faces.  One of them was armed with a handgun.  They approached the clerk and demanded money.  The clerk gave them some cash from the register and they fled to a van in the parking lot.  Video surveillance from the robbery was released to the media.  An anonymous citizen provided Johnson's identity to police, who then put out a flyer to Virginia Beach Police Department Second Precinct police officers.  The flyer identified Johnson by his photograph and stated that he was a person of interest in the robbery.  Police arrested Johnson on November 26, 2016, and he confessed to his involvement in the robbery. He told police who was with him during the robbery, but prosecutors had insufficient evidence to proceed with charges against that individual.

Johnson has prior convictions for Receiving Stolen Goods <$200, Grand Larceny (4 counts), Conspiracy (2 counts), Destruction of Property, Burglary (3 counts), numerous Probation Violations, Drunk in Public, and Public Intoxication (2 counts).
