Pedestrian Fatality

Friday, September 08, 2017

Friday, September 8, 2017 at approximately 4:12 p.m., E911 received a report of a serious crash near South Military Highway and Auburn Drive.  This crash involved two vehicles and a pedestrian.  The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.  Despite lifesaving efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.  No other injuries reported and both vehicle operators remained on scene.

Investigators have determined that the pedestrian, identified as 55-year-old Joseph Mayo, was crossing South Military Highway on his wheelchair at the intersection of Auburn Drive.  A 2012 Toyota Corolla was traveling north bound on South Military Highway.  As the Toyota was approaching the intersection at Auburn Drive, it came to an abrupt stop to avoid striking the pedestrian.  A 2008 Ford Mustang traveling in the same direction and same lane struck the Toyota Corolla in the rear.  The impact pushed the Toyota forward, which caused the vehicle to strike the pedestrian.

It was determined that the pedestrian was not within a designated pedestrian crossing and that the vehicles involved had a green light.

This case remains under investigation by members of the Department's Fatal Crash Team are investigating.
