Public Meeting on Options for New City Hall Set for Aug. 23

Residents Invited to Share their Views

Thursday, August 17, 2017

The third in a series of public meetings to discuss the City Hall 2020 project – the City's need for a renovated or new City Hall – will be held Wednesday, Aug. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Westin Virginia Beach Town Center Ballroom, 4535 Commerce St. City staff will be on hand to provide information about the options that the City Council is considering for renovating and/or rebuilding City Hall near its current location at the municipal center.

The nearly 50-year-old City Hall building requires major renovations that are complicated by the presence of friable asbestos and the way the electrical and mechanical systems were installed. The city also needs about 70,000 more square feet to accommodate employees and services provided to the public.

An overview of the structural issues in the current City Hall building will be provided at the meeting and residents will have the opportunity to have their questions about the project answered and to give their input. This feedback will be provided to City Council for members to consider as part of their deliberations on the issue. A decision to move forward with one of the proposed options is expected to be reached by this fall.
