ARREST MADE - Officer Injured after Stopping Suspected DUI

Investigators have identified and arrested 21-year-old Anthony J Paul Arizmendi of Chesapeake.  Arizmendi has been charged with Felony Eluding Police, Felony Hit & Run - Personal Injury, Obstructing Justice, Identity Fraud To Avoid Arrest and Falsely Identify Self To Law Enforcement.  Arizmendi is being held in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond.

On July 27, 2017 at 12:06 a.m., a Virginia Beach Police Officer attempted a traffic stop on a suspected DUI near the intersection of Artic Avenue and Virginia Beach Boulevard.  The officer made contact with the operator of a white Hyundai Elantra.  While the officer was speaking with the operator, the operator engaged the accelerator, causing the vehicle to strike the officer.  The suspect vehicle fled the scene towards Baltic Avenue and struck an occupied vehicle at the intersection 22nd Street and Baltic Avenue.  Both vehicles came to rest in the 500 block of 22nd 1/2 street.  The suspect fled on foot.  The occupants of the second vehicle were treated on scene by Emergency Medical Services.

This suspect is still being sought by Virginia Beach Police.

The officer was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, treated and released. 

​This case remains under investigation by members of the Department's Traffic Safety Unit.
