Residents Invited to Share their Views on Options for New City Hall: Facebook Live and In-Person Public Meeting Set for Wednesday, July 26

Wednesday, July 19, 2017

The next in a series of public meetings to discuss the City Hall 2020 project – the City's need for a renovated or new City Hall – will be held Wednesday, July 26. Citizens can join a Facebook Live broadcast meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. at, and an in-person public meeting will take place that same evening, July 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th St. City staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide additional information at both meetings.

The current City Hall was built in 1969 and now requires major renovations that are complicated by the presence of hazardous friable asbestos and the interconnected electrical and mechanical systems that do not allow sections or even floors to be isolated for repairs or replacement. Originally built to accommodate services for a city of about 300,000 residents, even with modern conveniences like online bill pay and employee teleworking, the City needs about 70,000 more square feet to accommodate employees and services for the public.

The City Council is considering several options for renovating and/or rebuilding City Hall near its current location at the city municipal center. A decision to move forward with one of the options is expected to be reached by this fall.

Viewers of the Facebook Live meeting and attendees at the in-person meeting will get an overview of the current City Hall, information on the proposed options for City Hall, and have the opportunity to have their questions about the project answered and to give their input. This feedback will be provided to the City Council for members to consider as part of their deliberations on the issue.

Another City Hall 2020 meeting is scheduled to take place on Aug. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Westin Virginia Beach Town Center Ballroom, 4535 Commerce St.
