Give the Tractor Trailers a "BRAKE"

Thursday, July 13, 2017

Due to the ongoing construction of the Lesner Bridge, trucks carrying oversized concrete bridge segments are being transported to the construction site frequently Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The transport trucks are escorted by two private escort vehicles with flashing yellow lights and oversized load signs on the vehicle, and two police vehicles at all times while on city streets.  The route of transport is I-64 to Northampton Boulevard  and then onto Shore Drive.

The weight of these trucks exceed 280,000 pounds, and the stopping distance at 30 miles-per-hour is over a football field in length.  With that being said here are some safety tips for drivers:

  • Tractor-trailers do not have the same ability to maneuver in traffic that other vehicles do.
  • Be aware of truck blind spots.  If you cannot see the truck driver in their mirrors, then the truck driver cannot see you!
  • Do not cut in front of large trucks, also, avoid stopping suddenly in front of them. Remember trucks are heavier and take longer to make a complete stop.  Additionally, do not ride beside the truck; keep a safe distance away from them.

Under Virginia State Code, it is a violation to impede an escort under a valid permit (state code 46.2-828.2) and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle (state code 46.2-829)

We will be giving additional attention to this danger and issuing tickets for violations.
