Officer Involved Shooting / Barricaded Subject - Resolved

Tuesday, June 13, 2017

On June 13, 2017 at approximately 6:30 a.m., members of the Virginia Beach Police Department's Investigative Division were in the 1600 block of Ohio Avenue to execute a search warrant for Distribution of Child Pornography located on electronic devices.

At the location, there were two separate buildings where officers were staged.  The officers were wearing clearly marked Police outer vest covers with POLICE written in white lettering on black background.  Additional uniformed officers were on scene to assist Investigators.

Two teams were on the property.  One team was staged at the main dwelling, the second team staged at the rear garage/dwelling.

The second team announcing their presence breached the doorway to the garage.  The officers continued to announce their presence as they advanced up the stairwell to the landing at the top where they breached a second door, at that time they were fired upon.  One officer was struck multiple times.  Four officers returned fire and the team retreated down the stairs.

As this became a barricaded subject situation, protocols were followed and decisions were made to request assistance for an additional vehicle from Virginia State Police.

A reverse E911 was sent out to residents nearby, for their safety, advising of the active situation and asking that they remain indoors and avoid the area.

At 12:05 p.m., the subject exited the residence and was apprehended by a K9 Unit.  During the course of the arrest, the suspect sustained a minor injury from the K9 bite.  He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.  He was subsequently transported to the Detective Bureau, where he is being held pending formal charges.

Two additional officers sustained minor injuries during the execution of the search warrant, both were treated and released.
