Keep Virginia Beach Beautiful and the ViBe Creative District Launches 2017 Great American Cleanup “Clean Your Block Party”

Thursday, March 09, 2017

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA,  -  Keep Virginia Beach Beautiful, which envisions a Virginia Beach that is a clean, green and more beautiful to live, has announced the launch of the 2017 Great American Cleanup,  on Saturday, March 11th at the ViBE Creative District Parklet, which is located between Cypress and Mediterranean Avenues.

Entering its 19th year, Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest community improvement program that kicks off each March with events occurring from spring through fall in more than 20,000 communities across the country.

Each year, the Great American Cleanup engages more than 5 million volunteers and participants who take action in their local communities to create positive change and lasting impact. Keep Virginia Beach Beautiful, along with other organizations in Keep America Beautiful’s national network of community-based affiliates, plan volunteer events and education programs that help to renew parks, trails and recreation areas, clean shorelines and waterways, remove litter and debris, reduce waste and improve recycling, and plant trees, flowers and community gardens.

“This year, Keep Virginia Beach Beautiful is proud to be partnering with the ViBe Creative District,” said Keep Virginia Beach Beautiful’s Executive Director Kristi Rines.  “Through volunteer efforts, this Clean Your Block Party 2017, encourages and empowers all volunteers and participants to take what they learn from experiencing a public space Great American Cleanup event and bring it home to organize an event on their own block.”

“It’s inspiring to see the millions of volunteers that turn out each year to participate in Great American Cleanup events that are conducted by our affiliates and partnering organizations,” said Keep America Beautiful’s Senior Vice President/Marketing & Communications Mike Rosen. “We look forward to even greater volunteer engagement and additional community projects that will help Virginia Beach transform its public spaces into beautiful places.”

This year’s Great American Cleanup theme is “Clean Your Block Party,” and the objective is to encourage local volunteers to build a sense of community pride with their family, friends and neighbors, while making a lasting, positive impact – block by block. Participating affiliates and partnering organizations will provide activity ideas and resources to help anyone conduct a Great American Cleanup event in their own neighborhood.

“We are so appreciative for this partnership with Keep Virginia Beach Beautiful,” said ViBe Creative District’s Executive Director Kate Pittman. “The effects of this community engagement project will be enjoyed by residents throughout the rest of the year as we plan programs and events in ViBe’s 18th Street Parklet.”

Each year, on average, the work of volunteers during Great American Cleanup events returns more than $175 million in measurable benefits across the participating communities. The Great American Cleanup makes a meaningful difference to the places in which we all live, work and play.
