Virginia Beach City Manager Dave Hansen announced today the appointment of Pedro Wallace as chief information officer and director of the Department of Information Technology Department. Wallace is currently the CIO in Chesapeake, VA.
"Pedro is a great find for the City of Virginia Beach," said Hansen. "He is a forward-thinker with a strong reputation as a collaborative problem solver. He helped the City of Chesapeake make significant technological advances despite some fiscal challenges. His command of what it takes to lead the transformation to Next Generation and cloud-based systems will keep Virginia Beach focused on making sound investments in emerging technologies," he said.
The Center for Digital Government recently named Virginia Beach as one of the most technologically advanced large cities (populations of 250,000 to 499,999) in the nation. The Department of Information Technology has 174 employees, an annual operating budget of $30 million, and a six-year capital budget of $50 million.
Wallace has 34 years of public and private sector experience in the information technology field. Prior to joining the City of Chesapeake in 2007, he served as the director of information services for the City of Boynton Beach, FL. Wallace also worked in Guilford County, NC, and for Harcourt Brace & Company.
Wallace earned a bachelor's degree in business management from Nova Southeastern University and is an accredited Certified Chief Information Officer. His appointment is effective April 13, 2017.
