Virginia Beach Convention Center Earns Virginia Green Travel Star Award

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

The Virginia Beach Convention Center will be recognized as Green Convention Center of the Year later this week at the 4th annual Virginia Green Travel Conference and Travel Star Awards luncheon at University of Virginia's Darden School Conference Center. First Lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe will present the 2016 Virginia Green Travel Star and Green Travel Leader awards to businesses in the tourism industry who have demonstrated exceptional effort and commitment to environmental excellence.

As a destination, Virginia Beach was an early adopter of Virginia Green, a statewide initiative which encourages green practices throughout the tourism industry. The program is run through a partnership of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging & Travel Association and the Virginia Green Travel Alliance.

"We are incredibly proud to once again recognize the Virginia Beach Convention Center as a Virginia Green Travel Star," says Tom Griffin, executive director of the Virginia Green Travel Alliance. "The growth of the Virginia Green program statewide has been remarkable, and our awards program is a celebration of that progress. Virginia Green Travel partners are truly leading our program's efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of the industry and to increase green tourism business in Virginia."

"The Virginia Beach Convention Center is proud to be a leader in sustainability both locally and across the country. We started with Virginia Green and single stream recycling in 2007 and have grown our sustainability efforts year after year. Having earned LEED® Gold Certification in 2010 and 2015 recertification, the VBCC continues to set an example of environmental stewardship and energy savings," said General Manager W. Courtney Dyer, CFE.
