City Closings and Openings Announced

Trash/Recycling suspended on Tuesday; Voting polls in 17 precincts open from 6 a.m.-7 p.m.

Early Closings on Monday, Jan. 9

  • All Virginia Beach Public Library locations will close today at 5 p.m.
  • The Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center will close today at 5 p.m.
  • All recreation centers will close at 7 p.m., and all programs, including swim lessons and leagues, are canceled. All parks and park facilities will close at 5 p.m. as usual, except for Mount Trashmore, which is closed all day today.

Modified Operating Conditions on Tuesday, Jan. 10

Most City of Virginia Beach offices and facilities will open to the public at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10 under "modified operating conditions." This means some non-essential services may be limited, delayed or canceled. City employees should follow their department's emergency procedures and keep in contact with their supervisors as required. The City's liberal leave policy will be in effect.

All city offices and facilities will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday except:

  • The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center will open to the public at 11 a.m.
  • The Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center will be open its normal hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for reclaims only.
  • Mount Trashmore Park will be closed all day on Tuesday, but other parks are open or from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Closed on Tuesday, Jan. 10 are:​

  • The TCC/City of Virginia Beach Joint Use Library
  • Virginia Beach City Public Schools
  • The Wahab Law Library
  • The Commonwealth's Attorney's Office
  • The General District Court and Clerk's Office
  • The Circuit Court and Clerk's Office
  • The Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court and Clerk's Office

Additional Operations​

  • For the Jan. 10, 2017 Special Election to fill a vacancy in the House of Delegates 85th House District, voting polls in 17 precincts will be open from 6 a.m.-7 p.m.

  • Trash and recycling collections are suspended on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Residents are asked to place their trash and recycling carts at the curb and leave them there until they are serviced. Collections may be slower than expected due to road conditions. Normal yard debris and bulk item collections are suspended for the week of Jan. 9 and will resume next week.
  • Early Childhood Programs at Williams Farm, Princess Anne, and Bow Creek will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10 when the recreation centers open and close at their normal time.
  • Group fitness classes before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. are canceled. Please call ahead and check with each center regarding classes during the day.​
