City Crews and VDOT Working to Clear Roads

Lesner Bridge Closed

Updated at 11:20 a.m.

City officials urge residents and visitors to stay off the road today while crews work to clear the streets. If you don't have to drive today, please stay home. The roads are unsafe and cars on the road hinder plowing and treating efforts.

City crews, with help from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and contracted services, are plowing major roads, concentrating on main thoroughfares. Secondary roads will be plowed later today. Residential streets will not be plowed because the damage risk is very high and there is limited space to push away the snow.

  • The Lesner Bridge is closed both eastbound and westbound due to ice and bridge freezing.  The bridge will remain closed until it is treated and safe for crossing.
  • The Sandler Center Box Office is closed today.
  • For other closings and cancellations, visit

  • Sledding at Mount Trashmore Park is prohibited because of the dangers of sliding into the roadways.
  • Ice-covered waters can be very inviting, especially to children, but they are unsafe as normal ice thickness in the Hampton Roads area will not support the weight of even a small child or pet. Take care of the children in your lives by keeping them away from any lakes, ponds, canals, etc. Likewise, all adults should keep watch over waters in their neighborhoods to keep children and pets away.
  • All city offices and facilities are closed today. Decisions about Sunday, Jan. 8 will be made later today.
  • For help with shoveling, call Operation Blessing at 757-274-8650.
  • If you lose power, call Dominion Power at 1-888-667-3000.
  • Reserve 911 for true emergencies. For other inquiries, call 311.
